Shakespeare created a tragic ending between Romeo and Juliet while also incorporating other important characters from the play. She results to killing herself by kissing Romeo’s poisoned lips at 5.3.171. Juliet is upset and confused when she discovers Romeo is dead beside her grave. Shortly after, Juliet wakes up to see Friar Lawrence and asks him, “O comfortable Friar, where is my lord?” (5.3.152). Following the duel, Romeo kisses Juliet and drinks the poison from the apothecary and dies. The two begin to duel, until Paris shouts “O, I am slain!” (5.3.72). He is with Balthasar, and as Romeo begins to open Juliet’s grave Paris, one of Juliet’s lovers, angrily steps forward to face Romeo. The scene where Romeo approaches Juliet’s grave begins at 5.3.22.
His effects in the film help create the significance of the lovers and their tragic ending. Luhrmann is able to create this adaptation through specific camera angles, lighting, and color.
